eBay finds #2

I've gone on a bit of a shirt overload this time! Plus I've found the ultimate ASOS Academy look-a-like boots! I've been after them for quite a while now but they're still out of stock so I';ll just have to settle with these £10.99 beauties I found on eBay :-)

My love for styling...

A few years ago (back in 2009 to be very exact) I stumbled across a site called Polyvore, where I'd spend hours on end putting together outfits. I've always had a thing for styling and thought to myself "ooh Leah you'd make a great visual merchandiser or even a personal stylist!". Four years later and I still enjoy doing the same thing, looking back on my Polyvore creations do make me cringe and it shows how much my fashion and style has changed...thank goodness! I eventually took a break from Polyvore and found myself on ASOS Fashion Finder. Once again, I found myself spending the majority of my time creating outfits and entering competitions where prizes included ASOS vouchers, shopping sprees, holidays and more. I neglected my account for so long that it eventually got suspended so now I've had to start from scratch. I've only got 3 creations up so far but there'll be plenty more to come...

My pick of the kicks....

I've never been a girly-girl but then again I've never been a tomboy! In other words, I just don't know what I am! Some days I find myself wanting to be girly, you know, get my hair did, my nails done, wear heels....then I come to my senses and think "no Leah that's not you!". THEN I find myself just wanting to be casual and comfortable which is why I turn to trainers. I've been after a few new pairs to add to my shoe collection as I'm getting rather bored of my black/orange Nike Air Max 1s. Funnily enough, I've found myself lusting after the men's trainers. Why is it that men's trainers are always better than the ladies? Unfortunately my feet are just too small for men's trainers (..technically that's a good thing! ha!)...so fortunately I get to shop in the junior section! Here's a few kicks that have caught my eye lately...

I think I like NEXT now!

So yesterday I tagged along with my lovely mother on a shopping trip in search for a new autumn/winter coat. We popped into Next (now I'm not a huge fan of this shop, I like to stick to the same old H&M, Topshop and Primark!) but I was in awe of how many garments I was lusting after. I found myself picking up a jacket, a blouse, then I saw the most perfect trousers and oooo I came across the most gorgeous smock dress. Need I say I didn't actually buy any of the garments, I just found myself in front of the mirror admiring the garments against myself (what I should have done was popped into the fitting rooms to take a few cheeky mirror pics. Ha!) So yes, after today my opinion on Next has changed, I've even put together a next wishlist! Might have to start using mummy's next store card...fingers crossed she lets me!

One to Watch: Lizbet Sempa

L I Z B E T  S E M P A

So the other day I received a notification on Twitter saying I have a new follower, it was a young lady by the name of Elizabeth 'Lizbet' Sempa. There I was reading her bio (being the nosey parker that I am) and I discovered that she was a singer/songwriter. Now we all know I'm always on the lookout for new artists so I rummaged through her tweets and stumbled across a link to her Soundcloud and I instantly fell in love with her vocals.

The South-East Londoner has such an incredible mature sounding singing voice that you think she'd have had years of experience. Funnily enough, she's only 18 years old! How can someone so young sound so old? Absolutely unbelievable! With influences drawn from Erykah Badu and Nina Simone, I guess that explains it all! Lizbet Sempa sings with such grace that her enchanting voice will leave you captivated. She reminds me of a young Laura Mvula (not that Laura is old but you get my drift!)

Her debut EP, Indirect Thoughts, is scheduled for release later this year and I can not wait to hear more from this talented young lady.

Check out her acoustic version of "Mistakes", a heartfelt song with meaningful lyrics which portray vulnerability,.

Thursday 10 October 2013

Oh October you've been so good to me...

We're only 10 days in to October and it's just been so crazy hectic! I feel like I've been neglecting my beloved blog but I've just been so caught up over the last few days. October has been so good to me so far and I hope it stays that way. As you can see from my previous post, I managed to blag tickets to Cosmo's Fashion Masterclass which turned out o be absolutely amazing. Plus, I have some great news....I am now an entertainment and health writer for Birthday Magazine..WOOHOO! It's a new diverse teen publication to be launched in December and I'm ecstatic to be a part of the team. They've only got a website for now so check it out by just clicking the logo

My life is finally back on track and after having 2 long months off work I'll finally be going back next week. I've missed it so much but I'm not sure how I'm gonna manage being surrounded by so many clothes. I'm in desperate need of a new wardrobe but I've kind of put myself on a little shopping ban for a wee while because I'm spending way too much at the moment..tut tut! At the beginning of the year I told myself that I must shop in more charity shops, which I have been doing but not enough! I popped into the St Francis Hospice charity shop in Romford the other day and picked up a gorgeous vintage blouse for just £2.50. I picked up so many blouses I actually went overboard! I'm so indecisive but a lovely lady managed to help me whittle it down to just one. Plus, I came across the most beautiful vintage tan suede fur coat. I literally fell in love and it was only a fiver....but it was a size 16. I tried it on hoping it wouldn't look too big but unfortunately it was ridiculously massive!

I've bought soooo many new clothes recently and I really should do a haul but I literally don't know where to start. So for now, here's a few boots/accessories I've recently purchased

From top to bottom: (1) H&M French Manicure - £4.99 // (2) Gold chunky hoops, eBay - £3.99 // (3) Asos leaf earrings - £6 // (4) Topshop b&w cross earrings - £2.50 // (5) Primark bronze necklace - £1 // (6) Topshop spike ring - £2.50 // (7) Primark gold necklace - £4 // (8) Asos rose gold collar necklace - £5 // (9) Chunky lion head necklace, eBay - £6.99

My favourite buy has got to be the gorgeous leaf earrings from ASOS...they went down in the sale from £15 to £6! What a bloody bargain!

But anywho, I've also bought a few new boots to add to my shoe collection. I've been after the chunky black boots from H&M for months now so was over the moon when I found out they were back in stock. I've tried to hunt them down in almost every single H&M store I could find but I've had no luck...plus I'm not too keen on shopping on their website! So my next option was the cut out boots from New Look, I tired my local store with no luck but managed to find them in Brent Cross..hooray! There was just one size 6 left, it was as if it was there waiting me me. It was meant to be! They were quite big but I couldn't afford to leave them because I loved them so much. Ha!

As you should know by now I'm an avid lover of eBay, I'm a bargain hunter, a penny pincher! I spend hours and hours on eBay hunting for the perfect buy and one day I came across these gorgeous boots. I just had to make sure nobody would outbid me and luckily I am now the proud owner of these vintage brown pixie boots.

eBay - £8-something

Lastly, I bought these pair of River Island boots a few months. I remember some time last year they went on sale and I wanted them so badly, I popped back in the next day to find out they were gone and I couldn't find them anywhere else (just my luck!) So you could imagine how happy I was when I found out they were back on the shelves this year. Luckily I have a family friend who works in River Island, so I managed to get these boots for just £20!

Seeing as I've got 5 more days before I become a working girl again, I've decided to spend my time focusing on blogging and writing. So I've made myself a to-do list\;

- Catch up on The October Daily: Blogging Challenge
- Write a few entertainment articles for Birthday Magazine
- Think of a few ideas for a health article for Birthday Magazine
- Make a few alterations to my CV

Cosmo Fashion Masterclass: 08/10/13

So on Sunday I found myself browsing through my twitter feed and I came across a competition to win 2 tickets to Cosmopolitans Fashion Masterclass. I've been lucky enough in the past to win VIP meet and greet tickets to see The Saturdays plus tickets to The Look Show so I thought what the heck, let me enter! All I had to do was send in my name and number to their email. Rather simple aye? I woke up the next day to see an email in my inbox with the words "Hi Leah,
Congratulations! You've won two tickets to Cosmo's Fashion Masterclass"..it came as a bit of a shock. I didn't expect to win at all!
First thing that came to mind was "omg what am I going to wear?"..I'm the type of girl who likes to plan outfits in advance but seeing as I had just 1 days notice, I ended up throwing on anything I could find in my wardrobe. I looked so blah dressed in my joni jeans, chunky cut boots, black vest, leather jacket with a checked shirt tied around my waist (hence why there is no OOTD). I took my lovely friend Hannah along with me as we made our way to The British Library and in towards The Conference Centre. We were greeted on arrival with a lovely glass of bubbly whilst every girl (and 1 guy) mingled with each other as we waited to head into the auditorium (they were running late unfortunately!) Considering it was a fashion masterclass, everybody looked so stylish with a few standing out for all the wrong reasons!

Now this was my first time attending a Cosmo Masterclass (I'm still upset that I missed out on the superblogging masterclass earlier this year) and I have to say it was very insightful! very, very insightful! I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. There was an inspirational talented panel of experts which included Cosmo's editor Louise Court who lead the Masterclass. She was joined by Laura Gravestock, Leanne Jones, Lisa Goody,Emily Fleuriot and Ian Wright.

One of the things that stood out for me was that the British jewellery designer Laura Gravestock (@LauraGravestock) started off in fashion retail, went on to do an evening course in jewellery making, then done a few internships and now she has her own collection! Like Laura explained yesterday; "You can do anything you set your mind to, regardless of what degree you've done or experience you have"

Next up on the panel was Leanne Jones (@Leannemjones82), a non-clothing buyer at River Island. She's basically responsible for all things shoes, jewellery, handbags and accessories.

Also on the panel was Lisa Goody (@LisaGoody), a senior press officer at Miss Selfridge, who had previously worked at House of Fraser.

Now my favourite expert on the panel was the down-to-earth freelance writer/editor Emily Fleuriot (@FashionPopcorn). The co-founder of Fashionpopcorn.com stood out for me the most as she was into the more editorial side of fashion and specialises in content for digital and social channels. A similar route I want to go down. Every time she spoke I was just so intrigued. Ha! She even studied at UCA which is one of the univeristies I applied to 3 years ago. Emily spoke about the importance of being able to find a story in fashion, write about it and making sure that the readers are engaged within it; "Journalism/blogging is knowing how to incorporate facts into a story and then telling that story an engaging way" She also explained the importance of technology and social media and adding layers; "It's about how tweeting, Instagram or other platforms can add value to blogging. Not just repeating the same thing". I'll definitely be taking on Emily's advice and I'll be browsing the Fashion Monitor website which she suggested for making contacts and finding jobs within the fashion and beauty industry.

Last on the panel was the laid back, humorous and handsome Ian Wright (@Ian_W_Wright), a fashion director at Industry magazine and Drapers. He explained that ""I wouldn't have got my job at ASOS without a blog"..the wonders of blogging aye! When asked about one of his highlights, Ian went on to tell us that one of his highs had to be a Marc Jacobs afterparty that he attended in America. He's definitely living life!

After the panel had given us wonderful career advice and an insight into their backgrounds, it was time for a short Q and A session. Only a few girls got to ask questions as time was getting on and we had to be ushered out of the auditorium. But luckily enough, the panel stuck around to have a quick chat with some of the audience members.

In my opinion the fashion Masterclass was mainly for those who are trying to break into the fashion industry whether it be fashion design, setting up your own label or even working in one the major fashion houses...which is not what I want to do. I'm more into the whole editorial side of fashion. I want to write. I just want to work in a magazine!

The panel even gave us CV advice, which I've been having a lot of trouble with lately. They explained "keep it simple", which we should all know by now! Believe it or not I've only just made my media CV 2 weeks ago..I went for a simple but creative look and kept it quite brief. Although I'm now going to have to make a few alterations seeing as Emily explained that "When applying for work, it's not enough to just be enthusiastic, you need to show you have skills, too"
What was truly inspirational was the genuine passion each of the panelists showed. Failure is not an option and no matter how long it takes or no matter how many crappy jobs you have to go through in order to get where you want to be, just remember...you will get there eventually!
Ill definitely be attending the Cosmo's Editors Masterclass in November where the Amazing Victoria White (Editor of Company Magazine) will be on the panel. For anyone interested in journalism, online publishing, writing or blogging then I suggest you attend this masterclass! Tickets are only £35 and you can buy them here. For more info about The Editors Masterclass click here.
Oh I forgot to mention we were given a £40 goody bag to take away with us. I think my bag was so heavy that the handle broke! Ha! But here's what was inside (my ultimate fave has got to be the Matte Me ultra smooth up lip cream)

Day 5: If I had, I would

Today's prompt/topic for The October Daily: Blogging Challenge had got to be most simple and easiest thing ever!

Complete the sentence: If I had  _________, I would __________. You can make as many sentences as you'd like.

If I had the chance to turn back time, I would do it in a flash.

I could sit here and type a billion sentences, but that was the first one that popped into my head. I know I should live life with no regrets but there are so many things in life that I wish i could change. If only life had a rewind button I'd be a happy bunny :-)

xoxo

Day 4: Thoughts of a newbie

Oopsy daisy! Why does it feel like there's just not enough hours in the day? I've been so caught up doing God-knows-what that I haven't had a chance to do day 4,5 AND 6 of The October Daily: Blogging Challenge!..sooo here's a late post!

Today's prompt/topic is a bit of a tricky one for me. Share your experience during your first few weeks/months in blogging. Why is it tricky?...erm because it hasn't even been a month yet, let alone a few weeks since I've made this blog. As a matter of fact, it's only been 2 weeks. So yes, that's right..im a newbie blogger!

So I started this blog in September 2013 with the intentions of actually blogging on a regular basis. I made a vow to myself to not neglect this beloved blog. I did make one at the beginning of the year and within 2 months I just eventually stopped blogging., but that was just because of university commitments and just not having any time for myself! So let's call this a fresh start and so far it's going rather good (fingers crossed it stays that way). As a newbie blogger, so many thoughts run through my mind; "will anyone read my blog?", "will people like what I write?" and my biggest worry is "will I get any followers???". I guess it's still early days and it's all about networking. Although my mind is so over active, I find it hard to come up with content to post..actually that's a lie. I have so many ideas but I'm a serial procrastinator so things never get done! (tut tut Leah) This is one of the main reasons I actually decided to take part in The October Daily, so that I'd be more consistent with blogging. What made me start blogging anyway? Well it's something I've always wanted to do and something I should have done a very long time ago considering I want to make it in the magazine journalism industry. I'd find myself always reading other people's blogs and then thought to myself "It's about time you made your own". So here it is....I was contemplating between Wordpress and Blogger and I'm happy I stuck with blogger, I think it's because I get to design and add all these widgets and thingy majiggys to my page. I still have alot to improve but give me a month. I'm going to shhh now as I feel that I'm just babbling on. Toodles.

One to Watch: Izzy Bizu

I Z Z Y  B I Z U

Mix a little Corinne Bailey Rae with a bit of Purple Ferdinand and what do you get? Izzy Bizu! A 19-year-old singer/songwriter hailing from South West London. The half English, half Ethiopian upcoming artist grew up listening to the likes of Ella Fitzgerald,  Betty Swan and James Brown along with newer artists such as Adele and the late Amy Winehouse. Fresh faced Izzy Bizu's unique vocals create a whole new genre, a fusion of soul, pop, jazz and funk.

Izzy Bizu released her debut EP in September, Coolbeanz, a collection of acoustic tracks which included the finger snapping, renowned hit "White Tiger". The fresh, vibrant, melodic love song with a catchy instrumental shows off the distinctive vocals of the young talent which is bound to uplift all listeners.

With her peculiar tone of voice, it's needless to say that this rising star is set for big things. Her breathtaking voice distinguishes her from her competition making her one of the most anticipated acts for this year!

Day 3: Those were the best days of my life...

Oh how time flies, it's been 6 years since I left secondary school and the funny thing is...I remember it like it was just yesterday! School had to be the best 5 years of my life and I wish I could turn back time just so I could do it all over again. So it's day 3 of The October Daily: Blogging Challenge and today's prompt is share a high school memory that you will never forget.

Now this is going to be a tough one because I have so many unforgettable memories. In my school we had a massive astro turf (it even had a little sand pit!) where all the boys would play football and us girls will intrude and annoy the life out of them...eventually we would get beaten up. It would get pretty rough and we'd end up running for our lives lol. I've always wanted to attempt to make a people pyramid so one day I gathered all the girls and we tried to create our own. After 7635272819 attempts we finally got there in the end....that was until all the guys came and kicked us down! I'll never ever forget that day, looking back and thinking about it just makes me smile. Here's a pic of our crazy attempt of the pyramid...ta daaaa

Another memory I'll never ever ever forget is the day I opened my GCSE results. A few weeks before results day I was absolutely dreading it. I kept thinking "omg Leah you didn't try hard enough" "omg what if you failed". I remember waking up and heading down to the school, butterflies in my stomach, hands shaking and I just felt an awful lump in my throat. I opened the envelope which had my grades in it and I just screaaaaamed. I could not believe what I was seeing! I got 13 GCSEs!!!! 2 A's, 10 Bs and 1 C. I've never felt so proud of myself, all that doubting myself for nothing...I ran to find my maths teacher and gave her the tightest hug ever and didn't let go for a good 5 minutes. Ha! Without her I wouldnt have achieved the results that i did. Thanks Mrs Linton, wherever you are!

I could go on forever about my time in high school but I'll think I'll just leave you with just 2 of my most treasured memories :-)

xoxo

Wednesday 2 October 2013

Day 2: Closer to my dreams.

Get a certain or favorite lyric/s from your favorite song, and tell us how it inspires or describes you.

G O A P E L E - C L O S E R

"Some times it feels like I'll never go pass here
Some times it feels like I'm stuck forever and ever

But, I'm going higher
Closer to my dreams
I'm goin' higher and higher
I can almost reach

Some times you just have to let it go
Leaving all my fears to burn down
Push them all away so I can move on
Closer to my dreams"

This song gives me life. Up until this very day I still get goosebumps every time it blares through my speakers. It's always been one of my favourites but I'm currently going through a rough time at the moment and the lyrics inspire me to remain focused and positive. Wherever I'm down in the dumps I just close my eyes, listen to the lyrics and I let myself go, I just feel so free. "Some times it feels like I'll never go pass here, Some times it feels like I'm stuck forever and ever" - I constantly feel like there's so many boundaries that are stopping me from moving forward in life, in a way I feel trapped. But what I like to tell myself is that no storm lasts forever, better days are coming. Everybody in life goes through a struggle to get where they want to be, but we have to remain positive. This is my empowerment song and really do hope and pray that one day I will get closer to my dreams.

Have a listen here
 :-)

Wednesday Wishlist

I haven't been shopping since August because I've been in and out of hospital (now that is a world record for me!) so I think I deserve a nice long shopping trip, it's way overdue! Now that winter is soon approaching I'm going to need a whole new wardrobe to keep me nice and warm, I've been lusting after so many items but I somehow managed to whittle it down to 6 items I need in my life right now.

C A R D I G A N. (H&M - £39.99) Well hello cardigan, oh don't you look soooo warm. This long cardi will be the perfect staple for my winter wardrobe. The shaggy wool blend makes it look so snuggly, it's bound to keep me warm on the cold nights!

N E C K L A C E. (Primark) I've always had a thing for Primark jewellery, sometimes I love, sometimes I hate it. But they have got it oh so right with this one! It's a part of their new collection for AW13, now I'm not quite sure on the price but I'll still purchase it whatever it is.

D R E S S. (Topshop -  £38) Right now I'm absolutely loving bottle green coloured clothing, I go through colour phases; first it was burgundy, then speckled grey, thennnn beige and now green! Unfortunately this beauty of a dress is out of stock online at the moment (boohoo!) so I'll have to just hope my local has it in store. Can't wait to wear this with a lovely pair of brown chelsea boots!

B O O T S. (H&M - £29.99) I always have trouble shopping for boots because I'm so indecisive, I'm sure I've been looking for the perfect boots since the beginning of the year!..BUT I think I've finally found them! I've never been fond of H&M shoes but I absolutely adore these burgundy boots (they come in black too!)

B A G. (H&M - £29.99) My whole wardrobe is practically H&M thanks to being employed by them! This bag is one of the popular pieces at my store and I think I'm gonna have to jump on the bandwagon and buy one myself! I'm not really a bag-kind-of-girl, I often stick to plain, simple, boring black bags but the moment I set eyes on this bag I knew I wanted it! I love the colour, I love the style and I just love the gold coloured detail!

S H I R T. (Primark - £12) So, remember when I said I'm so indecisive? Well, I previously bought this shirt...then returned it...and now I want it back! I don't even why I returned it to be quite honest, but I do remember it was rather oversized despite me buying it in a size 8! Fingers crossed my local still has it, knowing my luck they probably won't :-(

What's on your wishlist?

Day 1: The October Daily

October is finally here! (which means only 2 months til Christmas..ahhhh)...and it's time to begin the October Daily Blogging Challenge. I've been looking forward to this ever since I joined the link up so here it goes.

Today's topic/prompt is share at least 5 reasons why you blog

1. To improve my writing. I've always been into writing but being the serial procrastinator that I am I keep stopping and starting. I'm ashamed to say that as a Magazine Journalism Graduate I did not have a blog when I was studying for my degree (tut tut). I did start a fashion and music blog at the beginning of my final year but I got so caught up with my special project that I just didn't have enough time to concentrate on the whole blogging malarky. Halfway through university I got more into designing and print production of magazines and eventually got tired of writing...BUT now this blog is to help me get back into the writer that I used to be!

2. To meet new people. I enjoy meeting others with the same interests as me. Hardly any of my friends have the same fashion and music taste as me (strange i know!) so I'm just using this blog as a way of socialising and meeting like minded individuals.

3. To express myself. I'd like to say that I have a very over active mind. This blog is a way to express myself by putting my thoughts and feelings into written words. I see it as a online journal that I'm sharing with the world with the hope that somebody out there enjoys reading what I write :-)

4. To market myself. I've come across so many bloggers who have been offered so many opportunities because of their blog! Now that I've got my degree in Magazine Journalism I would love to go ahead and work in the magazine industry..but it's not that easy! I'm hoping this blog will promote my creativity and who knows what could happen. P.S...I would love to eventually be Company Magazines blogger of the week!

5. Gives me something to do. I'm the type to get bored easily and I have to constantly occupy myself. Blogging is my hobby! I have so much spare time now that I've finally finished education and even though I'm currently working part time, blogging gives me something to look forward to when I get home.

eBay Finds #1

In my spare time I always find myself spending hours on eBay bidding away on 526373828 items. I can honestly say I think I'm an eBay addict! I'm always popping things into my basket and adding items to my watch list. Here's my top 6 eBay finds:
